From high accommodation prices in top nomad hotspots to costly Wi-Fi and limited access to affordable health care, the post highlights some challenges that can quickly eat into that remote-work freedom. :money_with_wings::computer:

According to the Working Abroad Index 2024, which compared expenses for rent, groceries, public transport, utilities and co-working spaces in European capitals, the average monthly living cost for digital nomad workers has risen to €1,586 – a 5% increase on last year.

  • Career Growth Abroad :rocket:: Countries like the United States and Switzerland score high for career growth and opportunity, making them popular destinations for expats looking to expand their professional horizons.
  • Cost of Living Concerns :money_with_wings:: While countries like Vietnam and Portugal offer a lower cost of living, many expats report rising expenses in hotspots like the UAE and the US.
  • Friendly for Freelancers :earth_americas:: For remote workers, countries such as Mexico and Spain rank well for digital nomads, thanks to supportive visa policies, good Wi-Fi, and local freelancer communities.

A few other takeaways:
London and Dublin remain the most expensive capitals for expats, with monthly living costs averaging €3,227 (+7.1%) and €2,634 (+1.6%) respectively. Despite these cities experiencing slower cost increases compared to others, the gap between Western and Eastern Europe is widening. Prague, for example, saw an 11.7% drop in living costs.

On the more affordable end, Bucharest remains the cheapest European capital, with living costs at €829 per month, up 3.2% from last year, according to the data. Zagreb (€1,108) and sunny Athens (€1,104) also remain attractive options.
